SUGAR PINE FALLS is about growing up fast. Monty and his little sister are being driven halfway across the country by their mum (Hannah), in another attempted escape of Monty’s alcoholic father. Monty is 16 and can’t yet shake the responsibility of looking after his emotionally erratic mum. When they arrive at the Sugar Pine Caravan Park, Monty forms an unexpected friendship with James; an intriguing and artistic older boy. James has a heaviness weighing on him and takes to the Monty’s awkwardly insightful presence as a much needed distraction. But, SUGAR PINE is a dark place where everyone has something to hide and happiness is fleeting. A body lays limp beneath a waterfall and as the film unravels the awful truth will be revealed.

Based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen, this film is told from the perspective of a pine tree as it experiences the journey of life. Growing from a small seedling to a great tree in the forest, it is eventually decorated as a Christmas tree, before being thrown in the garden shed and being burned in a fire - which the tree sees as its 'Blaze of Glory'. Winter and growing seasons are described. Commentary written by Liz Lochhead.

Director William Witney puts his distinctive stamp on the Don "Red" Barry western Outlaws of Pine Ridge by opening the picture with a body sailing through the plate-glass window of a frontier saloon. Barry stars as gun-slingin' Chips Barrett, who makes it his mission in life to prevent the inaccurately nicknamed Honest John Hollister (Noah Beery Sr.) from becoming territorial governor. Complicating things is the fact that Chips is in love with Honest John's daughter Ann.
